When I first opened up the link to the speech, “The Danger of a Single Story” I did not know what to expect and I was curious to find out what this woman’s story was and what a “single story meant.” It was truly an eye opening speech. I made many observations throughout her speech, but learned that people really believe or think of someone or something based on one perception they have heard of it. I am guilty of doing this. Adichie’s style is her giving personal stories of how people come to have one single story, she shared about the people she met and how they viewed her- and how their perception of her shaped her life. This speech really made me go back to when I was a child and how what and especially HOW my parents talked about someone or something still sticks with me to this day.
Children’s view’s on everything in life comes from one single story, and before watching this documentary I did not realize that. A child is not born knowing about racism that child is taught racism. A single story is what shapes how much judgment and racism goes on in todays world; and that was truly eye opening to finally understand. Speech as a genre can be very informative and useful, and it gives the person telling the speech flexibility to express their topic through their own eyes, their own stories. Including several voices in a speech just like Adichie did gives the audience a chance to understand what they really mean, to look into the deeper meaning.
